As our effort to have more international exposures, Faculty of Geography sends 4 papers to be presented in oral session of International Symposium of Remote Sensing (ISRS) 2017. ISRS has been held since 1994, this year’s ISRS was held in Nagoya University, Japan. ISRS 2017 was organized by Remote Sensing Society of Japan (RSSJ), Korean Society of Remote Sensing (KSRS) and Chinese Society of Photogrammetry (CSPRS). ISRS is an annual symposium that involved hundreds of scientists of Remote Sensing to present their research. This year, Faculty of Geography of UGM sends its delegates, which is Sudaryatno (Dept. of Geographic Information Science) and Disyacitta Awanda (Cartography and Remote Sensing 2013) with the title of “The Use of Remote Sensing for Floods Disaster Mitigation in Kayan Watershed Kalimantan Utara Province”; Sry Handini Puteri (Cartography and Remote Sensing 2013) and Intan Elvira (Environmental Geography 2013) with the title of “Sea Turtle Friendly Zonation Area, Case Studies Goa Cemara Beach, Yogyakarta, Indonesia”; Muchsin Nur Wahid (Cartography and Remote Sensing 2013), Deha Umarhadi (Cartography and Remote Sensing 2013), Ayuni Nur Fitriani (Cartography and Remote Sensing 2013) with the title of “Mangrove Structure Mapping Model using Sentinel 2A Satellite Imagery”; Pramaditya Wicaksono (Dept. of Geographic Information Science) with the title of “Preliminary Assessment of Sentinel-2A Multispectral Image and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Mapping and Validation of Benthic Habitats Composition”. Each presenter is given 15 minutes to present their research and 5 minutes for QnA session. The diversity of the audience makes the discussion more vibrant, so presenters have more perspective to be taken into account. In addition, two of Faculty of Geography’s lecturers also became the committee of ISRS 2017. They are Sanjiwana Arjasakusuma (Dept. of Geographic Information Science) and Andung Bayu Sekaranom (Dept. of Environmental Geography)
Aside of having oral session, this event also had other sessions such as poster presentation, reception, and young scholars’ night. Poster session are being held in the lobby of Toyoda Auditorium. Every participant was given the time to present their poster and they shall answer the question from the audience as well. There are a lot of very interesting research from various field of remote sensing. This diversity allows the audience to have better transfer of knowledge. We can also see how developed the technique and the research of other institution.
The most interesting part of this symposium is the designated night for young scholar. This activity started from ISRS 2012. This activity is aimed for networking among early career scholar. This is a very good opportunity for graduate students and early career scholars to get to know each other and to find future collaboration. In this session, the participant are freely talks about their research, socializing, and increase their international networking. The participants are coming from various nation, such as Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, and so on.
“I hope that more students can participate in the international events like this. I also hope that the Faculty of Geography can give more supports for students who are willing to join international events. As Indonesian students, we need to participate more in order to show that Indonesian students can also be active in such prestigious event. This is a very valuable experience and knowledge that we cannot obtain in the classroom setting.”, said Sry Handini.
We need more participation from Indonesian researcher, especially in remote sensing field. Indonesian Remote Sensing Society shall be more active in the association so we can be more advanced in developing our research. More collaboration to the international researcher will allow more advanced application to be forwarded and more problem can be addressed, such as terrestrial monitoring, environmental problem, disaster management, coastal and ocean management and so on. The next ISRS will take place at Pyeong Chang City, Korea. We wish that more Indonesian can participate in ISRS 2018.
