Nugroho Christanto, S.Si., M.Sc., a lecturer from the Department of Environment Geography, joined the Young Researcher’s School (Prosper.Net) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from 5 to 16 March 2017 on the theme “Water Security for Sustainable Development in a Changing Climate”.
The aim of the 2017 ProSPER.Net Young Researcher’s School is to offer PhD students in the network an opportunity to engage with issues related to water security as it relates to sustainable development, while developing research skills and communication strategies, and encouraging future professionals to work within the field of sustainable development. During the program, the participants are expected to have: (i) knowledge and training regarding water security issues under climate change scenarios; (ii) opportunities for research skills development, including research communication through activities such as the 3-minute thesis competition1 and a research communications skills workshop. The aim is to help students frame their research to reach broader audiences; (iii) Interaction among participants and resource persons through group activities and field trips will provide context and content for students to develop a research proposal; (iv) an opportunity to develop an applied research proposal with the aim of helping address water security issues within the region. This proposal will look at how different policies and projects can be interlinked and provide integrative solutions for various sustainable development challenges; (v) resource persons’ lectures and workshops, which will be split between introductory and methodological themes prior to the fieldtrips and analytical/synthesizing themes after the fieldtrips to help develop each research proposal. Resource persons will include experts in each field both from Vietnam and abroad.
The Young Researcher School (Prosper.Net) were assisted by sixteen participants from eleven universities in Asia: Prince of Songkla University; Hokkaido University; Chulalongkorn University; Ho Chi Minh University of Technology; TERI University; Universitas Gadjah Mada; Tongji University; RMIT University; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia; Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia; Nanyang Technological University.
